Hi, new followers!
I’m becoming more and more okay with the term “graphic novel”. A necessary evil, or whatever. But saying that all graphic novels are “pretty good” is like saying that all movies bad. Or all music is okay. I think you’re allowed to say that autobiographical comics are generally boring and you’d rather read superhero stuff, but the difference is that you’re talking about a genre, and not a medium.
The problem, I think, is that most bookstores celebrate comics as a new expression of what has already been established as highbrow by literature.
Obviously, people are going to be okay with things like Maus, Fun Home, Blankets, Persepolis because they deal with grown-up things like war, sexuality (without being pornographic), relationships, and war again.
When that dude said that graphic novels were “pretty good”, I think that his limited exposure to comics made him believe that graphic novels can only be about certain things. They can’t be about WIZARDS or something.
Yaddadamean? Yaddadamsayin’?
ANYWAY, it’s still 6:30 on the best coast but HAPPY NEW YEAR
