some process shots of the missingno shirt, which you can buy here.
the middle one is really funny to me for some reason.
the second one, the one with the candy-colored circles, the rings of pink and red, I was trying to maintain that circular motion throughout the waves. And in the clouds, which I eventually canned. I wanted some like… epic One Piece-type clouds. Big ol’ fisheye clouds spreading out. (Maybe One Piece is a bad example. I’ve only seen a handful of episodes and have never read the manga, but it felt right.) Anyway, it suited the context, but the perspective wasn’t making any sense to me. I didn’t want Missingno to look too big.
The last one, the one with the sketchy lettering… I was onto something there. I imagined something more cloud-like and whispy. A speech bubble (which would make sense in this context). Graffiti influences, obviously. But pushing and pulling between legibility and secrecy. Ended up going with bubble letters, which reminds me of being in middle school. Drawing stussies (is that how they’re spelled?? You know what I’m talking about. Those “S” things.) and drawing Gundam and Goku and Pokémon.
That middle one, with the slightly three-dimensional Missingno, I hand-colored those pixels, unnecessarily, for a couple days (really just several hours but, you know, spread out). I’m accustomed to starting over a lot. I guess it’s part of how I work. I wish I could just be happy with my first drafts, though, sometimes.
