for ATTRACT MODE
Pokemon Blue was the first videogame I played in my own house, and I suppose that’s one of the reasons I have such an attachment to the series. Up until then, my only access to videogames was at friends’ houses, since my parents weren’t too keen on bringing me into that world. In 1998, I rented a Gameboy Color and Pokemon Blue from Blockbuster video and played it like crazy. I started with Squirtle. I made it to the Elite Four, but couldn’t beat the Champion. I had to return the cartridge before I was able to finish the game.
Finding Red in Pokemon Gold, having gone into exile in Mount Silver, was the coolest thing in the world.
:>
I imported a copy of Pokemon Gold when it came out in Japan ten years ago (give or take). I fumbled through it, knowing absolutely no Japanese. It was amazing.

The original comic is “Letters to an Absent Father” by Mare Odomo.
You know, people say that my friend Maxie and I both sound like Ash Ketchum. But we don’t sound similar to each other at all. Maybe Maxie sounds like Veronica Taylor and I sound more like Sarah Natochenny? Haha, I’m just rambling here.
HEY GUYS LOOK AT THIS THING
UH
I GOTTA GO TO WORK BYE

“Playing DS in Public” by Alexandra Dal.
This is pretty much me. Outside, I’m keeping it low key like the boss of all bosses you all know me to be, but in my head, whenever I beat a particularly difficult opponent or stage, it is like the god damn “Make’em Say Ugh” video — I’m riding on a golden tank in a packed basketball arena, slam dunking over fools in a gorilla suit, rappin’ with pre-jail Mystikal while Shaquille O’Neal watches from the crowd clutching a “No Limit Soldiers” shirt.
In my head, I’m living that American Dream we all woke up from after graduating high school, the sleeping fantasy that faded as the grief and brutality of the real world crept into our lives. What happened to those promises? Of family and comfort? Of coming out on top after working your ass off for years and saving money for a better future? Where are our Silkk the Shocker basketball jerseys?

My Missingno shirt from NopexMare Odomo arrived today!
I wasn’t sure when they were being shipped out so it was such a delightful surprise to come home to after work! Mom took a few shots of me showing off the shirt (along with my hat full o FYPblogxMare Odomo badges! It seemed appropriate.), which looks FANTASTIC. I am just so enamored with it. It is even more gorgeous in person. Plus there was all sorts of little goodies in the envelope, and a great little note written on the back!
I didn’t realize Nope was based in Jersey! Always great to deal with people from my home state! NJ represent!
oh, rad!

Ashley Davis drew me as my spirit Pokémon on the cardboard protecting the prints I ordered from her! Click through to buy a print of one of her no marios allowed! drawings!
p.s. the prints are gorgeous you should buy some/all/as many as you can afford of them!
This is the best Snorlax ever drawn.
Ashley has such a fuckin’ WAY with characters and composition <3
some process shots of the missingno shirt, which you can buy here.
the middle one is really funny to me for some reason.
the second one, the one with the candy-colored circles, the rings of pink and red, I was trying to maintain that circular motion throughout the waves. And in the clouds, which I eventually canned. I wanted some like… epic One Piece-type clouds. Big ol’ fisheye clouds spreading out. (Maybe One Piece is a bad example. I’ve only seen a handful of episodes and have never read the manga, but it felt right.) Anyway, it suited the context, but the perspective wasn’t making any sense to me. I didn’t want Missingno to look too big.
The last one, the one with the sketchy lettering… I was onto something there. I imagined something more cloud-like and whispy. A speech bubble (which would make sense in this context). Graffiti influences, obviously. But pushing and pulling between legibility and secrecy. Ended up going with bubble letters, which reminds me of being in middle school. Drawing stussies (is that how they’re spelled?? You know what I’m talking about. Those “S” things.) and drawing Gundam and Goku and Pokémon.
That middle one, with the slightly three-dimensional Missingno, I hand-colored those pixels, unnecessarily, for a couple days (really just several hours but, you know, spread out). I’m accustomed to starting over a lot. I guess it’s part of how I work. I wish I could just be happy with my first drafts, though, sometimes.
Hey you doofs. You can buy this on a shirt.

“Pokemon Cafe” goods available at Pokémon Center stores in Japan starting May 28. Look, maybe I want a cushion shaped like a big sandwich cookie, which is also vaguely Pokémon-themed, all right?
These goods are part of a new “Pokémon Cafe” promotion, which will tie into a similar promotion on the Japanese Global Link website to unlock Pokémon Cafe stuff for Black and White, along with one of four special Pokémon.
And don’t worry, it’s called a Pokémon Cafe because it serves food to Pokémon, not made of Pokémon.
